Dodgy advertising lands fines for NSW betting agencies

USING illegal advertising to lure in gamblers has landed two more sports betting agencies in hot water.

Unibet and Bet365 have both pleaded guilty to breaches under the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing's crack-down on dodgy betting advertising in New South Wales.

A Unibet advertisement promoting "First greyhound bet refunds!" offered "bonus money" with a refund of up to $50 on a gambler's first ever greyhound racing bet.

The company's website also promoted a "deposit bonus", "reward bonus" and "loyalty bonuses" when punters placed bets online.

Another promoted an "insured bet" and "first mobile bet refunds" offering cash refunds of up to $50 per loss on a first-ever mobile app bet worth $10 or more.

In fining Unibet $7500, Magistrate Susan McIntyre said the breaches were flagrant and it was hard to believe a company of Unibet's size was unaware of the law.

Bet365 offered a "100% matched amount as a bonus to bet with" of up to $200 for new clients who put $20 or more in their account.

It also advertised a "100% bonus when you place a qualifying bet on your mobile or tablet".

The company had argued the offers were not available in NSW.

However gaming inspectors tested the apparent restrictions and found NSW residents were still able to place bets.

Bet365 was fined $5000 for the two breaches, and both agencies were ordered to pay the OLGR's costs.

Betting companies Ladbrokes, Sportsbetting.com and ClassicBet have all been found guilty of breaches, with court action still pending against other operators.

The law states wagering operators must not publish advertising that offers inducements for NSW residents to gamble.
