Do right thing, and win

DO THE RIGHT BIN: Ballina Shire Council’s communication and education officer – waste, Kate Pye, with a hamper you could win by putting the right things in your organics bin.

HOW easy is this?

You could win a $30 fruit and vegie hamper simply by putting the right stuff into your organics bin at home.

Now, that's gold.

And the Ballina Shire Council bin campaign is called "green to gold".

Council's communication and education officer - waste, Kate Pye, said contamination of green waste in the organic bins had started to creep up since the bins were introduced in urban areas of the shire in July 2011.

The big problem, she said, was residents putting plastic bags and "degradable" bags into the organics bin which is meant only for organic waste that can compost within a 12-week period.

Because of the increasing contamination - and to reward residents who are "doing the right bin" - council introduced the "green to gold" campaign, with the end-result compost being the "gold" which can help grow fruit and vegies.

Council staff will be inspecting bins randomly from February 1 through to the end of April.

Those who have done the right bin will get a "Well done" sticker on their organics bin and go into the draw to be one of the 10 winners each month of a fruit and vegie hamper.

Those who have contaminated their waste will get an "Oh no" sticker on their organics bin telling them what they did wrong, and the bin may not be collected the following week if the problem persists.

The fruit and vegie hampers come from Nourish green grocer in Cherry St, Ballina, and winners of hampers will be published in the council notices in the Advocate as well as notified by mail.

Those with any doubts about what you can and can't put in the what bin, contact Ballina Shire Council on 6686 4444.
