DIY 'doctor' accused of slicing off man's testicle

A 56-year-old accused of removing the testicle of another man, in an operation which allegedly took place in a Port Macquarie motel room, on May 16 last year, has been arrested by plain clothes detectives outside court.

The Daily Telegraph reports Allan George Matthews was set to be sentenced this morning over a string of charges relating to the botched backyard operation but was placed in custody after police met him at the entrance to the courthouse.

It's alleged the victim posted an online ad asking for someone to help him because he could not afford a urologist to undertake the operation and was in need of attention after being kicked by a horse, but, a week after the surgery when the man's wound became infected he went to a local hospital which raised the alarm about the suspected illegal operation.

Mathews has since pleaded not guilty to the charge of reckless grievous bodily harm, but not guilty to removing tissue without authority, not keeping a pistol safely, possessing an unauthorised firearm, not keeping a firearm safely, and two counts of possessing or attempting to prescribe restricted substance - his grievous bodily harm charge will be mentioned in Sydney next week.
