Dive into Shaws Bay to help Ballina surf club
THERE will be plenty of splashing going on at Shaws Bay this Sunday.
The second annual Ballina Lakeside Shaws Bay Swim, supporting the Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Life Saving Club, will be held at the popular East Ballina swimming spot.
The surf club's director of life saving, Andrew Dougherty, said the inaugural event saw more participants than expected, with about 150 taking part.
That raised about $300 for the surf club.
Mr Dougherty said last year's event was held in February, but the second event was moved to April to fit in with other swims.
He said while there would be some competitive swimmers, the focus was on having a go.
The swims, in various age categories, will cover 850m and 1.7km, over a course at the southern end of the bay.
The swims will start and finish at the Ballina Lakeside Holiday Park on the eastern side of the bay.
All participants will go into the draw for major prizes.
And licensee of the Shaws Bay Hotel, Brendan Byrne, has chipped in $600 which will be the total prize pool for the 200m Dash for Cash from the pub to the holiday park.
The Dash for Cash is open to swimmers who participate in other events, and this year there will be four categories: Open male, open female, under-15 male and under-15 female.
Entry for the events costs $30 (1.7km), $20 (850m), $40 for both longer swims and $10 for the Dash for Cash.
Entry is free for swimmers aged over 70.
You can register for the swims at the surf club on Saturday, from 2-4pm, or on Sunday before 9.30am. You also can register online at oceanswims.com.au
