Discover Australia's best meat pie at Dough Fusion
IT might be a pie in the sky dream for most bakers, but Coolum's Dough Fusion has been crowned the maker of the best meat pie in Australia.
Owner Graham Martin thought someone was pulling his leg when he received the phone call telling him his bakery's chunky steak pie had taken out the award at the Great Aussie Meat Pie competition in Melbourne last week.
"On the Monday, I flew the pies down to the Fine Foods exhibition in Melbourne where the competition was being held," he said.
"Then I went to Shanghai on business.
"While I was there I got a call telling me we'd won. I said 'Come on'. But then they put me on to the organiser and he confirmed it. I couldn't believe it."
The award comes after Dough Fusion also took out the award for best gourmet meat pie at the competition last year.
Graham said there was no secret to making a great pie, but fresh ingredients were essential.
"We use use 95CL meat, when the industry standard is 25CL," he said.
"The customers know what they're getting and that's why they keep coming back."
Customer Stephen Gardner said he was not surprised the bakery had taken out the award.
"I had one yesterday - it was great."
