Diesel the cheapest in 12 years on Northern Rivers
THE price of diesel has fallen to its lowest level in 12 years and the NRMA is urging motorists to fill up and take advantage of the cheap fuel.
The cheapest places to fill up with diesel on the Northern Rivers today are Casino at 108.5 cents per litre and Brunswick Heads at 109.9 cents.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said lower than expected global economic growth had led to a fall in demand for diesel.
"Diesel is the main source of fuel running the global economy, with most farming, mining, heavy transport and manufacturing equipment running off it," he said.
"While petrol prices fluctuate wildly with Sydney's volatile price cycle, diesel prices tend to remain more stable and price movements more subtle.
"While the global economy is not growing as fast as expected, the flipside is that downward pressure on diesel prices means Australian motorists can cut a break at the bowser."
Diesel accounts for more than one quarter (26.4%) of all retail fuel sold in NSW.
The average price for diesel in Sydney is currently 105.2 cents per litre, the lowest since 2004.
Regional centres are also enjoying cheaper diesel with prices dropping to 103.9 in Goulburn, 107 in Albury and 109.3 in Wagga Wagga.
