Did we really have summer?

WE'VE now left summer behind and started on autumn, but our recent weather asks the question: Did we really have a summer?

We had two floods, many storms, wind, rain and clouds. So was this really summer?

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Acacia Pepler said, in fact, we did.

While our rainfall was higher than average, our 2012-2013 summer was actually warmer than our past two.

The average temperature for the summer just gone was 28.6 degrees, lower than the summer average of 29.5, but higher than the 27.4 of the 2011-2012 summer and the 28.3 of the 2010-2011 summer.

However, no, we weren't imagining it. We did have a lot of rain.

Ms Pepler said the Northern Rivers had 797.9mm of rain over the three months, which was well above the average of 466mm.

In fact, this summer was the 10th wettest summer on record since they began measuring in 1884.

We luckily didn't beat the number one record, which was 1206mm through the summer of 1892-1893, with 799mm in February alone.

But Ms Pepler said recent summers had experienced rainfall quite close to our most recent figure anyway.

Over the 2010-2011 summer we received 729.6mm of rain and over 2007-2008 we got 757.6mm of rainfall.

"The summer was interesting if you look at it in the context of putting it into NSW, because NSW had quite a warm summer and was quite dry in places," she said.

So what can we expect for autumn? Ms Pepler said the forecasts so far weren't showing anything dramatic.

"At the moment there isn't anything kind of pushing us either way, so we'll just have to wait and see," she said.
