Diabetes risk doubles in remote or disadvantaged areas

LIVING in remote or socially disadvantaged areas doubles the risk of developing diabetes, a major 12-year study of Australians has revealed.

The study by the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute confirmed social disadvantage, youth and physical activity were major factors in developing diabetes.

It examined 11,000 Australians over 12 years to find serious health risks for people with obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The study also found as many as 269 adults over 25 years of age were being diagnosed with diabetes every day
