Desireux ‘explodes’

THE Ballina-trained Desireux made a late charge to win the $15,000 Paul Nielsen Hydraulics Newmarket Handicap (1000m) yesterday.

For Danny Bowen, it was a thrill to win the second feature race of the Ballina Cup carnival.

“It was really exciting,” he said. “She just exploded when she saw the gap. She’s struggled to get going for a while and she’s had a few hiccups but she turned in a beautiful run today.

“It’s just taken a while to get her mentally right. I thought she was a chance. She’s only a class four horse and she beat some good ones.”

Jockey Darron Coleman held on grimly before a hole opened up midway down the straight which he eased the mare through.

Centenn and Border Loop filled the minor placings. Early favourites Mister Celestial and Slick Nick failed to run on.
