Demonstrator scales rig

GREENS environment spokesperson Cate Faehrmann says it's not surprising a demonstrator has scaled a coal seam gas drill rig in protest over Eastern Star Gas' destructive proposal for 550 twin drill sets in the high conservation value Pilliga Scrub.

"The more governments continue to ignore community concerns on this, the more we'll see people going to extreme lengths to highlight the serious threats this industry is posing," she said.

"Awareness around coal seam gas is growing. People know that this kind of mining is dangerous for water, community health and farming. However, what is sometimes hidden are the destructive impacts on environmental assets like the Pilliga.”

A public forum on coal seam gas mining, focusing on Metgasco’s plans to build a pipeline into Queensland from its gas fields near Casino, will be held from at the Kyogle Memorial Institute from 6.30pm today.
