Thomas the Tank Engine demo derby driver last woman standing

THE horn sounded for the demolition derby at the Maclean Show and the ground was engulfed in dust and smoke.

Ten minutes later, a car emerged, slightly battered but still turning over with a roar.

The best woman had won.

Anita Moran, who runs the River Cafe in Maclean, crawled from her Thomas the Tank Engine decorated car and raised her hands in the air.

The victory was Anita's first in the four demolition derbies she entered at the Maclean Show.

"And she hasn't stopped gloating about it," husband Daniel, who was also in the race, said.

"Even after I went and won the Grafton Show on Saturday night she was telling me that she beat 11 blokes, and I only beat 8."

The couple entered their '99 Magna sedan and an AU Falcon wagon into the event, and said getting the cars ready for the event was three month's work.

"We both work on the cars, but a group of us all get into it and did up six cars," Anita said.

"Two came from the Brushgrove Wreckers where Daniel works, and the others came from around the area.

"Steve at S&A Autos is a big help, he helps weld the cars together and gets them to the track and away again."

While she said she was proud of her victory over the men, Anita said there were a few worries through the drive.

"It was a bit scary this year because of the dust so you couldn't see anything," she said.

"But you just brace yourself for the first hit, and then you go for it.

"You don't feel the hits when you're driving, but you do a couple of days later."

And while the verbal jousting between the couple hasn't stopped, Anita says she can't wait to do it again.

"We've got another two cars in the shed ready to work on."
