Demetriou to step down as AFL CEO at the end of 2014
ANDREW Demetriou will step down as chief executive of the AFL at the end of the 2014 season after more than a decade in the top job.
Demetriou announced his resignation at a press conference in Melbourne on Monday morning alongside AFL Commission chairman Mike Fitzpatrick.
The announcement comes amidst serious questions surrounding the leak of the names of 14 players involved in ASADA's investigation into Essendon's supplements program but Demetriou said he informed Fitzpatrick of his decision at the Super Bowl in January.
He officially informed the AFL Commission at its meeting on February 17.
"I've always said it's a privilege and honour to serve the game but I also believe that the time is right," he said.
