Definitive guide names Diggers Beach among the best in Aus

A RECENT survey of Aussie beaches has shown what locals have long known.

Diggers Beach has been named one of Australia's greatest in new book 101 Best Beaches.

Described as 'two strips of sand totalling just one kilometre in length,' 'rarely crowded' and 'charming', Diggers Beach is up for a People's Choice Award - to vote, click here.

Authors Andrew Short and Brad Farmer compiled the list after visiting every single one of Australia's 11,761 mainland beaches - a true labour of love for the two academics and surfers.

"We looked at every beach and at the factors that make beaches special - the views, the sand, surf, bordering headlands and a range of supporting amenities," Andrew and Brad said of the selection process.

"We looked for the best natural experiences, but also for great city beaches and for those with fascinating historical or human stories. And then we sat down and debated which of the thousands of wonderful beaches should make the final cut."

Andrew, a professor at Sydney University, has spent thousands of hours in the study of coastal geomorphology.

He began cataloguing beaches in 1987 as part of a massive safety survey for Surf Life Saving Australia.

Co-author Brad Farmer grew up on the Gold Coast, and in 1985 co-wrote the first Surfing Guide to Australia.

He's lived what could be a dream life for a surfer - founding Ocean Care Day, the Surfrider Foundation, co-founding the National and World Surfing Reserves movements and writing for TRACKS magazine.

Between them they've come up with the definitive, exhaustive list of Aussie beaches.

"Not everybody will agree with our selection, of course," the authors said on their website.

"To them we say, the 11,660 runners-up are also worth exploring."

"Whether you're a surfer, angler, beachcomber, or you just like building sandcastles with the kids, the beach has something for everyone."
