Decision made to keep saleyards in council control

MORE than 200 local people attended the community meeting regarding the future of the Casino Saleyards last night.

Richmond Valley Council general manager fielded questions from the floor and outlined the options available going forward.

“I think Vaughan’s presentation was pretty good,” Casino Auctioneer Association president Matthew McCormack told the ABC’s Rural Report.

“There were eight options which were narrowed down to three by the end of the night.

“The option of selling the saleyards is off the table which is a good thing.

“Whether it is leased long term is yet to be seen.”

Questions of how much the council should be subsidising the saleyards was asked.

Mr McDonald also raised the issue of animal welfare being a concern if the saleyards weren’t properly upgraded.

“Obviously if we have the upgrade we will have to pay a bit more,” Mr McCormack said.
