Deadpool: He’s not so ‘super’ but he’s a hero

DEADPOOL is a funny movie.

It's also gross, incredibly violent, occasionally touching and over the top in nearly every way.

Marvel's latest hero, well, anti-hero, is taking the piss out of Marvel, superhero movies in general and himself.

Ryan Reynolds is back in top comedic form as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, and only too happy to give himself crap for his previous crack at playing a superhero in Green Lantern.

From the opening credits, it's clear Deadpool does not fit the mainstream superhero mould.

There are direct references to the cameras, the audience and, in a humorous Australian twist, Wolverine himself Hugh Jackman.

Reynolds doesn't just break the fourth wall; he smashes it, reaches out into the cinema, grabs you by the collar and then makes a joke about said fourth wall before shooting some bad guy in the head.

The film also plays with time, jumping back and forth in Deadpool's origin story, often pausing during the middle of the action.

I found some of the fight scenes a bit overwhelming in the same way as films like Man of Steel, where seemingly unbreakable heroes and villains beat the crap out of each other in a barrage of violence.

A good chunk of the violence, though, like when Deadpool shoots three baddies in the head with a single bullet, is used for comedic effect.

Reynolds and Morena Baccarin have great chemistry and their love story really grounds the story.

The film's blend of snarky, dark, twisted humour and extreme violence certainly won't be to everyone's tastes.

If you liked the trailers then you'll like the movie.

Deadpool might reject the superhero tag, but you'll cheer him on nonetheless.

Deadpool opens nationally today.
