Deadly snake, drugs discovered during raid

DETECTIVES were greeted by a deadly rattle snake in the latest raid targeting illegal guns in NSW.

The snake was one of four exotic reptiles discovered during a search which also allegedly netted a bag of illegal fireworks, a semi-automatic handgun, 354g of cannabis and 5g of white powder.

A 35-year-old man walked in while police were in the home and was arrested.

He was charged with possessing drug and firearm offences and possessing protected fauna.

The snakes were taken to a wildlife centre.

The gun found in the raid was one of many seized by police in Sydney in a 24-hour period.

Loaded guns were discovered in an abandoned car in the western suburbs while three armed men were arrested at a sports oval near Ryde.

An alleged associate of the Hells Angels bikie gang was arrested this week over a string of drive-by shootings in 2011.

The 23-year-old has allegedly been linked to four shootings related to an ongoing dispute between the Hells Angels and Nomads.

Since NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione launched a new operation to tackle gun crime in Sydney's west earlier this week, more than 40 weapons have been taken off the streets.
