Childcare worker admits 'daycare can be abuse'

A CHILD care industry insider says she supports the notion that long day care can be a form of child abuse.

And the Sunshine Coast worker, who asked to remain anonymous, believed many others in the industry, who witnessed the trauma some children go through when left for long days, felt the same.

"Some kids are dropped off at 6.30am and don't get picked up until after 5pm," she said.

"You see these kids and you go 'you poor little things', particularly when all the other parents are picking their kids up.

"They are always at the door waiting, looking. It is really sad.

"It is particularly hard in winter when they have been dragged out of their beds and they arrive looking like they're thinking 'What the hell am I doing here?'.

"They still want their mums."

The child care worker's daughter had a baby on the weekend.

"I was in there, looking at her, thinking there is no way you are going to a child care centre," she said.

"My daughter told me, 'No, Mum, we planned this baby so we don't have to do that'.

"It makes you wonder why their parents bothered having a child if they have to put it in a day care centre for that long."

"Some kids are dropped off at 6.30am and don't get picked up until after 5pm,"

She said many children, particularly the older ones, benefited from their time in care.

"Some kids seem to be well-adjusted."

But there were those who had been coming for a couple of years "and are still crying and screaming for their

parents" when they are dropped off.

"It might happen twice a week for them. It is still heartbreaking," she said.

"Sometimes it can be five minutes of constantly trying to calm the child down and it can be a real struggle.

"They punch and kick. They don't mean it. They just want to get out of my arms and get to their parents."
