David is passionate about capturing the action on film

FOR David Tootell, photography has always been a passion.

It was sparked when he used a Box Brownie as a child, but developed further when he got an instamatic camera in 1971.

When David (pictured) got his first "good camera", a 35mm Pentax, he started shooting motor racing and landscapes.

His passion for fast cars would eventually see him photographing celebrities, and would-be supermodels, at exclusive events.

The Rockhampton amateur photographer said it was thanks to a Morning Bulletin press pass that he was able to shoot Jon Stevens from Noiseworks at the 2001 Honda Indy 300 at Surfers Paradise and young Miss Indy contender Jennifer Hawkins in 2002.

The model, who would eventually go on to become Miss Universe, won third place in the 2002 Barter Card Miss Indy contest.

David said the shot of Jon Stevens happened completely by chance after he was approached by a staff member who asked him to snap a picture of the musician with a meter maid in his arms.

He said he only had four shots left on his camera at the time.

Back then, David shot everything on film, but said the advent of digital was an improvement.

"Back in the old days we never thought that digital would ever come," he said.

"We used to run around with cameras with black and white film and colour slides and colour prints, but the brand new digital cameras now are just wonderful.

"You can shoot in low light; you couldn't do that with film cameras. It's simply amazing."
