At the show with Brunswick musician Dan Hannaford

HE MAY be just one man, but Brunswick Heads' Dan Hannaford truly makes a big sound.

A former Ballina High student, Hannaford's music is a mix of folk, roots, blues and layers of rock that have made him famous around the area as a hard-working, independent musician.

We spoke to him ahead of his next Ballina gig.

You do everything yourself. Writing and composing is the core of what you do but other things become urgent, right?

Yes, I am wearing lots of hats. When you are a one-man act you are driving the bus, setting up the PA, you are playing and talking to the fans after the shows, selling the CDs and then packing up the PA and driving the van back home. It's a full-time business for me and it's been like that for the last seven years.

It's great and I love it but at the same time the better the business goes, the busier I am.

Some months ago I heard a massive sound coming from a venue in Byron Bay. I expected a band but it was you playing solo. How do you keep the energy so high every time?

It's like in any physical exercise; you get a release of endorphins.

I am not one who likes to do things half-heartedly and just go through the motions.

If the song is worth singing, it's worth giving it all you've got.

At the Ballina RSL ground floor this Saturday from 6.30pm.
