Dane leads the way for Woodlawn

ST JOHN’S College Woodlawn are the 37th Australasian Marist cricket carnival champions after a win over Marcellin College of Bulleen in Bendigo yesterday.

Woodlawn went into the final round leading Bulleen on percentages and guaranteed the title with the win.

Woodlawn were cruising at 3-160 but collapsed to be all out for 190.

Captain Dane Clarke scored 68 from just 45 balls, Dain Moreton 50 and Ben Cooper 29.

It proved to be a winning total, with Bulleen restricted to 7-171 from its 50 overs.

Moreton took 2-18 from 10 overs with his left-arm spin and Kristiaan Ezzy 2-20.

On Sunday, Woodlawn (5-263) defeated Sacred Heart College of Auckland (174), with Cooper thrashing 116 runs from 89 deliveries and taking two wickets.

Team manager Geoff Gaggin said Woodlawn were hoping to get a number of players sel-ected in the Australasian Marist XI.

Clarke and Cooper were almost certainties, with Moreton and Ezzy other good chances.

Gaggin said Clarke’s captaincy and wicketkeeping had been impressive all week and played a big part in the title triumph.
