Dain's set for season of cricket

YOUNG Clunes cricketer Dain Moreton will leave for England next Tuesday.

Moreton earlier this year was awarded the Adam Gilchrist Scholarship and will play for the Richmond Cricket Club near London.

The all-rounder turned out for Marist Brothers in Lismore until he moved to Queensland to link up with Souths in Brisbane and then to WA, joining Perth Cricket Club, where Adam Gilchrist played.

"I wanted to go somewhere so I could improve my cricket," the 19-year-old said this week.

"I had played two seasons in Brisbane for Souths in their Under-19 side and I could see that what they offered was better quality than I could have here.

"After speaking with Stan (Gilchrist) about options, Perth seemed like the best place to go.

"And now this scholarship gives me the chance to play in Eng-land, be part of a group called Young MCC Cricketers, and hopefully gain valuable experience by playing about seven innings a week.

"As a left-arm spinner, I took a good few wickets with Brothers, then in my first match in Perth, I scored 68 runs and took 4-30."

Adam Gilchrist once said that the scholarship was about the whole person - not just the cricketer - and it's something Moreton is looking forward to.

Following his stint for Richmond, he will return home in mid-September.
