Cut out for designing
IMAGINE designing and constructing fabulous and eclectic costumes for a living.
That's the job William Kutana dreamed of while pushing pens in an office in Sydney.
"I started off as a graphic designer and then went off and did this corporate life in sales and marketing," Mr Kutana recalled.
"I did that for eight years and I thought, I can't wear this suit and tie anymore and I want to get back to being creative.
"So after eight years I moved up here to do the costume design course at Wollongbar TAFE."
Mr Kutana then extended his skills by completing a diploma in Fashion at Wollongbar TAFE and he now works in production design at Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA).
Mr Kutana said the skills he gained at Wollongbar TAFE gave him the edge to be in demand in a highly competitive industry.
"I've actually worked with some designers that graduated from the more prestigious drama schools and some of those designers don't know how to sew or can't make their own garments," Mr Kutana said.
Mr Kutana admits to being an op-shop and vintage store "addict" and can regularly be seen scouting the aisles for unique and stylish costumes.
But if he can't find a costume in the right size or colour for a production, he can also tailor his own designs.
"At the TAFE at Wollongbar they taught us how to design, construct and pattern-make our own costumes," Mr Kutana said.
Growing up, Mr Kutana was drawn to the costumes in comic books, science fiction and adventure movies such as Star Wars and Mad Max.
He said these science fiction classics still have a big impact on his creative vision.
"I always thought that in 2012 we'd be wearing crazy space clothes but unfortunately we're still wearing denim jeans and T-shirts," Mr Kutana smiled.
Mr Kutana's next goal is to branch out into film, television and events.
"My dream is to work with Baz Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin on their next big picture. I'm just waiting for the phone call", he said with a laugh.
Mr Kutana can also create custom-designed costumes for any occasion.
