Cup runneth over for Our Kids

LAST year’s Our Kids Melbourne Cup Luncheon for the local children’s health charity saw Melanie Edelhoff score the role as event co-ordinator, but it was the glitz and glam she remembers most.

“It was my first Melbourne Cup Luncheon and it was so amazing to see everyone dressed up and being part of that racing atmosphere,” the German-born Ms Edelhoff said.

A ticket to this year’s luncheon at Southern Cross University at East Lismore will be hotly contested.

Last year’s event – one of Lismore’s few glamorous galas – was filled to capacity. The $50 tickets will be snapped up quickly, according to Ms Edelhoff.

And if the glamour doesn’t entice you, the prizes donated by major sponsor Fairmarket Lismore Antiques Centre just might.

The major prize on the day is an art deco-style ruby and diamond ring.

Participants can also win a freshwater pearl necklace with Victorian-style clasp and also up for grabs is a pink-hued version. Proceeds from the charity luncheon will go towards paediatric medical equipment for local hospitals.

Our Kids, which previously only funded projects for the Lismore Base Hospital, has branched out and is now donating essential equipment to a number of hospitals, including Casino and Urbenville.

“Last year we had 180 people at the luncheon – 170 women and 10 men – so we’ve organised something for the guys at the Lismore Turf Club,” Ms Edelhoff said.

“The bloke’s luncheon will feature comedians and should be a great alternative.”

Tickets for both events can be purchased from Our Kids by phoning 6620 2705.
