Celebrate Australia Day at Saltwater Freshwater Festival

IT'S about more than just music - it's the largest Aboriginal cultural event on the Mid North Coast and even beyond.

Saltwater Freshwater Festival takes place on Australia Day and organisers are issuing an open invitation to come together and experience Aboriginal living culture through the sharing of music, dance, food, conversations and family fun.

While the nomadic festival, returning to Taree for 2013, showcases some of the country's finest Aboriginal musicians and performers, it also covers a wide spectrum of inclusive Aboriginal cultural experiences.

The day will feature hands-on workshops, children's and youth spaces, traditional and contemporary canoes, midday basketball games and a fantastic market atmosphere featuring Aboriginal art, craft and food stalls.

The workshop areas will feature mini canoe making, weaving and dance while the separate children's and youth areas will include traditional story-telling, arts, crafts, ochre face painting, hip hop workshops led by The Last Kinection, mentoring circles and basketball games and workshops.

In the Yarn Tent, powerful speakers will be brought together, to share stories and fresh conversations around significant issues and ideas relating to contemporary Aboriginal culture.

On the sands of the Meeting Place Dance circle, local troupe Biripi Dancers will perform traditional local dances and a new collaborative, Saltwater Freshwater Dance, will debut.

And finally, following on with the strong canoe theme throughout the festival, Aboriginal canoes will take to the waters of the Manning River during the festival finale sunset parade and ceremonies.

For those living outside of the Manning Region, there will be return buses running between the festival and Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Gloucester and Forster.

Thanks to a Transport for NSW grant, fares will be only $3 each way.
