CSG reference in draft plan is a ‘betrayal of our community’

BALLINA councillor Jeff Johnson has lodged a motion for tomorrow's ordinary council meeting in response to the mention of coal seam gas mining in the NSW Draft North Coast Plan.

He said the reference to CSG in the plan had "reignited debate" and that it was timely for Ballina Shire Council to "reaffirm its opposition".

"The recently released Draft North Coast Plan makes specific mention of the Clarence-Moreton Basin coal seam and the 'coal seam gas resources that may be able to support the development and growth of new industries'," Cr Johnson said.

"Instead of promoting the 'potential' for CSG in our region, the government needs to support the community's clearly expressed position and declare the Northern Rivers as a CSG/unconventional gas exclusion zone like it has for other regions."

At tomorrow's council meeting, Cr Johnson's motion is to call on the NSW Government to declare the Northern Rivers a CSG/unconventional gas exclusion zone.

"Anything less would be a betrayal of the clearly expressed wishes of our community," he said.

"Our community has totally rejected CSG due to its impacts on the region's water, air and agricultural land resources; its industrialisation and fragmentation of rural landscapes; and climate change through fugitive emissions."
