Cricket: Top-order batsman Emms boosts Lennox
THE return of top-order batsman Daniel Emms could not have come at a better time for Lennox Head in Far North Coast LJ Hooker League cricket.
Emms will play for only the third time this season when the Pirates take on Ballina Bears at Megan Crescent Oval, Lennox Head, in a round of two-day games this weekend.
The teams will be without captains Andrew Lindsay and Justin Moore, who are away on NSW Country duty in Sydney.
Lindsay has been the outstanding player in the competition this season, scoring 448 runs including two centuries.
He was the difference for Lennox Head last weekend when he made 124 in a successful run chase against the Casino Cavaliers.
Emms is also a prolific run-getter with 408 runs from just eight games last season.
"We couldn't get a better player to fill the void," stand-in captain Todd Fisher said.
"Daniel worked on the roads and moved back to Macksville when his contract finished.
"He's not playing down there and his grandparents still live around here so it works out well.
"I know he is trying to get back for as many games as he can."
Fisher said the highlight of the season so far had been the form of Lindsay.
"In my eyes he is the best player in the competition," he said.
"He's been great for us and it's brilliant to sit back and watch.
"The best thing is he gets the runs quickly and he has all the shots."
Meanwhile, Marist Brothers have named Jared Seiffert for their game against Tintenbar-East Ballina at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina.
The all-rounder has been in Indonesia working with the national team as a development officer.
He can bowl a lot of overs and score runs with 345 runs and 18 wickets for the Brethren in the Hooker League last season.
Brothers look to be going from strength to strength with the inclusion of Seiffert into the bowling attack.
Fast bowler Brendan Mitchell and Kaleb Auld are the leading wicket-takers in the competition with 13 apiece.
Alstonville will take on the Casino Cavaliers at Hill Park Oval, Wollongbar.
And Pottsville hosts Cudgen in the Tweed derby at Seabreeze Oval, Pottsville.
All games are Saturday-Sunday, with the final round before Christmas being one-dayers next Saturday.
