Cricket Australia calls up Fawad Ahmed to join Ashes squad
LEG spinner Fawad Ahmed has played down his Ashes chances despite yesterday getting a call-up to join the Australia A squad in England.
The 31-year-old former Pakistani refugee got the call after a Bill to amend the Citizenship Act passed through the House of Representatives.
If the Bill passes through Senate, Ahmed will become eligible for national selection on August 18.
However, should the Bill to amend the Citizenship Act become law and he obtains Australian citizenship and an Australian passport before that date, he will become immediately eligible for national selection at that time.
The ICC's Player Eligibility Criteria does not apply to selection for national A teams.
Ahmed will be available for matches against Ireland (June 14-17) and Gloucestershire (June 21-23), saying he was delighted to get selected for the A Tour and that was where his focus remained.
"I've just played a few first-class games here in Australia, so I need to perform on that level and to prove myself, that I can bowl well," he said.
Ahmed said his selection in the Australia A side was a "dream come true".
