CONTEMPORARY Aboriginal artwork from two different continents and a chance to show your own artistry are on offer at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council said Big Eye: Aboriginal Animations would showcase various animations of moving images by Aboriginal artists from Australia and Canada, presented by cyberTribe and Queensland University of Technology.

In Big Eye, new media artists used animation and video to translate traditional Aboriginal culture into a contemporary context.

The artworks brought old stories into new contexts and tackled issues of concern to today's Aboriginal societies.

The council advised that visitors could have a chance to create their own computer-generated animation or just relax and enjoy watching the entertaining presentations.

Continuing the theme of creating your own art, the other exhibition at the gallery also encouraged people to take a hands-on approach to art.

Off the Shelf is a collection of endearing shelf paintings by Woodgate artist Jennifer McDuff, inspired by a range of knick-knacks and bric-a-brac she has accumulated from a lifetime of travel, work and family.

Visitors of all ages can create their very own shelf painting or drawing, using a shelf arrangement of objects on offer.

The activity has proven popular with children, but now the holidays are over, the grown-ups can take up the challenge.

Both exhibitions finish on February 11.
