MOTORISTS have been warned to expect delays after a serious crash closed the Bruce Highway about 20km south of Innisfail this morning.

Police and other emergency services are on the scene of the head on traffic crash involving a car and a truck near Cowley Beach.

Both lanes of the highway are closed due to the seriousness of this crash.

Roadtek crews are setting up diversion to redirect traffic around the crash site.

DIVERSIONS INCLUDE:

Motorists travelling south from Cairns to Innisfail will not be impacted by these diversions.

Motorists travelling south from Cairns, wishing to travel further south of Innisfail will be diverted via South Johnstone, Mena Creek to Silkwood.

Motorists travelling north to Innisfail and further north to Cairns, will also be redirected via this diversion and will travel via Silkwood, Mena Creek to South Johnstone.

HEAVY VEHICLES ARE NOT ABLE TO TRAVEL ALONG THESE DIVERSIONS AND WILL NEED TO DELAY TRAVEL UNTIL THE HIGHWAY IS CLEAR

All motorists are urged to be patient as the Bruce Highway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours while patients are treated and extricated from the vehicles.

All motorists are advised to expect delays.
