Craig Lowndes in doubt for Phillip Island 500 after crash

MOTORSPORT: Holden star Craig Lowndes is in doubt for this weekend's Phillip Island 500 after a high-speed crash in Supercars practice on Friday morning.

In a blow to the fan favourite heading into the fifth race of the year, Lowndes smashed into a tyre barrier at more than 200kmh in the final minute of practice one.

He was heard on the radio telling his team that the "right-front tyre exploded".

The three-time champion emerged from the wreck unharmed but was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks.

Erebus driver Dave Reynolds shocked the big guns to score the quickest time in the session, in which Shell driver Fabian Coulthard also came off on the third corner.

It is unclear whether Lowndes will return to the track on Saturday with the extent of damage still to be accessed.
