Craft beer comes to Beef Town in new festival
WHILE we down a cold one, Tony Hennessy explains how the Northern Rivers Craft Beer and Cider Festival came about.
New Rotary member Ian Leven had been to a craft beer festival and while Tony and he were (appropriately) having a beer, they decided if they didn't start a beer festival in Casino someone else would.
"Ian and I have talked about it for two and a half years," Tony said.
And what is a craft beer?
"A craft beer is a beer made by a small brewery as hand made operation."
"It is the difference between drinking a fine red from a bottle or from a cask," he said.
The price for to taste six craft beers or ciders will be $20 and people keep the souvenir glass.
"It beats the prices at Sydney Beer Week," Tony said.
Luckily, Tony's nephew is a forensic scientist who has taken a few years off and turned his talents to being a beerrmeister.
"He contacted the breweries for us," Tony said.
On board for November are Byron Bay Brewery with their Stone and Wood beer, Newstead and Australian Brewing Company from Sydney, Asahi from Japan, Cricketer Arms and Somersby Cider, Little Creatures from WA with others to be announced.
"The whole intention is to have craft beer on tap in town,"Tony said.
There is a tradition of Dinner with the Brewers the night before where food is served and brewers talk in detail about their beer and Tony said they'd like to do something similar in Casino.
Funds from the event will support Pathways to Employment, a program to help re offenders find work and learn new skills.
The Northern Rivers Beer and Cider Festival is on Saturday, November 19 from 11am to 5pm at the Clydesdale Motel and Steak Barn. Find out more on their Facebook Page.
