Crackdown on wayward telemarketers

THE Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and Vodafone Hutchison Australia are working together to stop dealers from calling people on the Do Not Call Register.

Vodafone has volunteered itself for an 'enforceable undertaking' to audit and report on all of its dealers.

"If it finds any of its dealers potentially breaching the Do Not Call Register Act, it must report the dealer to the ACMA immediately," said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.

"Compliance with the Do Not Call Register Act 2006 needs to be considered by telecommunications carriers across their entire dealer network."

Under the enforceable undertaking, Vodafone has also committed to:

  • Require all its subsidiaries and dealers to keep comprehensive records of the telemarketing calls made
  • Implement robust procedures around recording VHA's customers' consent to be called by, or requests to opt out of receiving, telemarketing calls from VHA, its subsidiaries or any dealer.

If Vodafone doesn't meet these obligations, the undertaking can be enforced by the Federal Court.

Members of the public can easily list their telephone and fax numbers on the Do Not Call Register by calling 1300 792 958 or visiting www.donotcall.gov.au.
