Cr quits Greens in row

BYRON Shire councillor Rose Wanchap has quit the Greens as tempers flared over the proposed West Byron development.

Rose Wanchap quit the party the day after crossing the floor at a meeting to vote against Greens Mayor Simon Richardson's emergency motion asking the State Government to defer rezoning of the 108ha West Byron site.

Cr Wanchap will continue on as an independent councillor and defended her right to vote on West Byron, saying there was no conflict of interest with her being a real estate agent.

"I have done what my conscience has told me to do; we need more affordable housing."

She said she was devastated at the "savaging" she had endured following the West Byron vote.
