Cowboys pay high price for referee who can’t count

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Cowboys' finals curse has struck again, this time in favour of a lucky Cronulla Sharks outfit.

Memories of last year's semi-finals controversy came rushing back when yet another refereeing blunder led to a 20-18 loss on Saturday night.

But this time it wasn't a speculative knock-on or double movement call. This time it came down to the referees' inability to count to six.

A converted try on the seventh tackle proved to be the difference between the sides, with only two points between them at the final whistle.

Having been booted from two finals series', the Cowboys are rightly furious about referees' inability to handle high-pressure situations.

In fact, refereeing blunders seem to follow the Cowboys around like a bad smell.

When they played the Broncos in April this year they were given an eight-tackle set by Ashley Klein, who was later awarded a State of Origin gig which was also plagued with poor refereeing decisions.

NRL director of football Todd Greenberg released a statement saying "we do have to be able to reassure players and fans that this won't happen again in any game".

But I would hazard a guess that players and fans are going to be a little hard to convince.

The NRL even put a second referee on the field, but that's been about as effective as a chocolate teapot.

Are these seriously the best referees in the country? How hard can it be? They don't even have to call a try anymore; they leave that up to the video ref.

Get it together, NRL.
