Couple running themselves raw around Oz

RAW vegan athletes Janette Murray-Wakelin and Alan Murray are taking what you could call "the long way around Australia".

Over the 365 days of 2013, the couple, originally from New Zealand, is on a mission to inspire and motivate conscious lifestyle choices, to promote kindness and compassion for all living beings and to raise environmental awareness for a sustainable future.

Yesterday they passed through Ballina on their way north to Queensland, staying on track despite the drizzle, wet and wind.

"(It's been) a very stormy morning. We've had about five days of rain and storm and now we're getting the sand and the salt added to the recipe," Mrs Murray-Wakelin said yesterday.

"The hardest part was going through the heart when we had those really hot days like 44-48 degrees, those days managed to hit us on hilly days when we were going up steep hills. That was pretty slow," she said.

She admitted it could be a tough journey at times, but overall, they're really enjoying it.

"It can be pretty tiring, (but) we're obviously trained up for it physically, so it's not a big toll on our bodies especially with the food we eat. It's just the weather conditions that make it harder," she said.

The pair have a long history in their two favourite R's: Running and Raw food.

In 2000, they ran the length of New Zealand covering 2182km running 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days - their record until yesterday, when they ran their 51st marathon in 51 days.

However in 2002, at age 52, Mrs Murray-Wakelin was diagnosed with breast cancer and the prognosis was only six months or possibly a year with conventional chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Instead she chose to take a natural path to help her body recover.

They then began to share what they'd learned who others, by founding a Centre for Optimum Health in Canada, establishing a highly successful Living Food & Conscious Lifestyle Course, and conducting many inspirational presentations internationally during the past 10 years.

RunRAW2013 is a fundraiser for the following charities: Animals Australia, Australian Paralympic Committee, Kids Under Cover, and The Gawler Foundation.
