Truck hangs over cliff

A BIRTHDAY camping trip nearly turned to tragedy for a Lismore couple on Saturday when their utility ended up with its front wheels over the edge of a cliff.

The couple, who didn’t want to be named, were camping at Cambridge Plateau, around 30km out of Casino on the Tenterfield Road.

The camping area has only one access road in and out, which is a narrow dirt track running along a steep escarpment.

“This morning we went toCasino to get some more food,” the man said as he described what happened.

“We were doing 40km/h when we took a corner too sharp and the truck started spiralling and it locked up.”

The truck ended up with both front wheels hanging over the edge of the cliff.

“The back right wheel was up in the air too,” the woman said.

“We had come up here to celebrate my birthday.”

The couple managed to get out of the truck and contact emergency services to help them get the truck off the edge of the cliff.

Kyogle SES attended the scene.

“The SES was great,” the man said.

“They told us we were very lucky as if we’d gone over the edge we may never have been found.”

The truck was towed back to the camping site without a scratch.

The couple were unhurt but shaken by their ordeal.
