Councils tally the damage

LOCAL councils have begun to add up the costs following the latest storm to hit the region last week.

These estimates come following Prime Minister Julia Gillard and NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell's announcement that Ballina, Byron, and Clarence Valley councils would be among 11 local government areas to receive disaster funding for the storm, while at this stage, Lismore and Richmond Valley local government areas will miss out.

Byron Shire Council said that the council had estimated the damage to public infrastructure at about $1.1 million.

Added to their Australia Day flood damage bill of $3-4 million, they're facing around $5 million or more to fix the damage.

Lismore City Council estimated their recent storm damage bill to be $1 million, which, added to their $1.4 million of damages from the Australia Day floods, brings their bill to $2.4 million.

Ballina Shire Council said yesterday that while it was hard to measure costs at this point, damage to public infrastructure (not including damage to private homes or businesses) was at $200,000.

They said that added to their Australia Day flood costs of around $300,000, they're looking at approximately half a million dollars of damage costs.

The Clarence Valley, which suffered heavy flooding, leading to the death of a 73-year-old man at Copmanhurst on Sunday, estimated damage to be at around $3 million.

Added to their bill from the Australia Day floods, this brings their total cost of damage to between $10-15 million, they said yesterday.

Further disaster declarations were expected to be made in the coming days.
