$700k ‘gold-plated’ dunny sparks outrage

THE flush-with-cash Mornington Peninsula Shire is spending way more than a penny to build a new toilet block for Mornington - nearly $700,000 in fact.

The shire has trumped even Bayside Council's "gold-plated" $617,000 dunnies with their 'Changing Places' facility to be constructed next year.

The advanced Changing Places design consists of a four unisex cubicle set-up, one with specific equipment including a lift hoist and tables to support disabled people, those with high needs, carers and parents.

It will cost $623,841 plus GST - a total of around $686,000 - with the State Government chipping in $100,000.

It is the first full-accessible toilet facility in the township.

Shire project delivery manager Derek Rotter said the Octavia St block, 11m x 3m in size, was a high specification prefabricated Exceloo toilet design.

"This type of facility is very robust and can handle very high visitation and usage, as is expected at this precinct," Mr Rotter said.

"The facade and form of the building has also been designed to create a point of interest and to complement the streetscape redevelopment in Empire Mall."

Ratepayers Victoria president Jack Davis said the figures involved were "ridiculous".

"It's just crazy, it's not an acceptable amount for ratepayers to (have to pay)," Mr Davis said.

"You could build a whole house for that.

"It's just another example of councils spending money excessively, they need to be condemned."

Mr Rotter defended the cost, saying it wasn't a blowout.

"The pending works have been market tested through public tender," he said.

Other works included are footpath reconstruction, demolition of the existing toilet block and replacement carparks.

Construction is expected to start in February and be finished by June.
