Councillor raises a stink over foul odour

ODOURS from the city's waste management centre brought Councillor Keith Rhoades to his feet for a "matter of an urgent nature" at the last meeting of Coffs Harbour City Council.

Cr Rhoades described the pungent smell he experienced travelling north on the Pacific Hwy past the Englands Road Waste Management Facility one day last week as "probably the most vile I have experienced in many years... a most pungent and rotten smell."

Cr Rhoades said the smell had stayed with him almost until he reached the new medical centre.

"What a way to say 'welcome to Coffs Harbour'," Cr Rhoades said.

"We were told many years ago that this would not happen - I wouldn't blame workers who have to put up with it for going home."

The city's new GP super clinic is based on Stadium Dr, where a new south Coffs Harbour subdivision is also planned.

Coffs Harbour City Council general manager Steve McGrath said he had asked the workers for the reasons why the odour was so strong, what steps were being taken to mitigate it and what steps were available under the council's contract.

Mr McGrath said he had already seen the manager of the facility and was close to having all the information for Cr Rhoades.

Deputy Mayor Rodney Degens objected to the smell being brought up as a matter of an urgent nature, saying it had been going on for years, but Mayor Denise Knight said it was her call as to whether it was urgent and the urgency was not the smell itself but the resolution of the smell and where that process was at.
