Council trainees impress with goals for the future
LOOK closely at the faces of the young people who have been given the opportunity to carve out not just a job, but a career in local government.
Richmond Valley Council’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES) is working with 15 trainees in business, information technology, environmental health, civil construction, engineering, horticulture, plumbing and warehouse distribution.
Reece Andrews has his eye on the general manager’s chair. Ebony Nowlan won Casino TAFE student of the year and works for the council in the events sector.
Richmond Valley Mayor Ernie Bennett said the program helped with the problem of “our youth leaving town to get employment”.
“This program is reversing that,” Cr Bennett said. Having 15 grand- children, he understood the impact this had on the community.
Local Government Minister Paul Toole acknowledged the trainees at the council chambers in Casino.
“We are looking at how to roll out this program with other councils. This means people don’t have to move away,” Mr Toole said.
