Council lease for Lennox phone tower

A PROPOSED lease between Ballina Shire Council and Optus for the operation of the controversial mobile phone facility in Basalt Court at Lennox Head is currently on public exhibition.

Despite strong community opposition to the facility, it was erected in 2011.

Under the Telecommunications Act, the council had no powers to stop the installation of the telecommunications equipment on top of the existing water reservoir.

Now the council is proposing to enter into a lease agreement with Optus for the operation of the mobile phone facility.

The lease would initially be for five years, followed by three option periods of five years each.

Submissions on the lease must be lodged by Thursday, January 31.

For more information phone the council on 6686 4444.
