Some pomp to mark renovation of old Casino Council building
IF ONLY the founders of the Municipal Council of Casino could see it now.
While it's been 133 years since the formation of the council - and a lot has changed over the years - a bit of pomp and ceremony still has its place.
Richmond Valley Mayor Ernie Bennett next month will don his official robe and chains at a special meeting in the former heritage-listed council chambers, now home to the On Focus organisation.
The ceremony will celebrate the marvellous restoration undertaken by On Focus CEO Fiona Miller and her team.
When purchased two years ago, the building was in need of some love and attention. Now it boasts new carpets, fresh paint, polished staircases and floorboards and a new lift for ease of access.
The council meeting on Tuesday, November 19 will be the start of a three-day opening celebration hosted by On Focus.
A tour of the building for interested community members will take place the following day, and the official opening by Cr Bennett is on Thursday, November 21.
The council's general manager, John Walker, said the magnificent renovation effort put in by On Focus allowed the council to celebrate an important chapter in its history, as well as pay tribute to the past and the creation of the future.
The entire community is invited to join in the celebrations.
"We want to share the building with the whole community," open day co-ordinator Fiona Mitchell said.
"The open day and tours will happen between 9am-4pm and we will have a sausage sizzle in the courtyard between 12pm-2pm."
John Walker said it would be a great opportunity to celebrate and learn about former councils, share memories and local knowledge.
