Coraki church repeatedly hit by thieves

THIEVES have allegedly broken into Coraki's St Joseph's Catholic Church six times in five weeks, including one instance when they stole the priest's car and torched it.

Lismore police Inspector Nicole Bruce said offenders allegedly broke into the church on December 13, 19, 22, 28, 31 and January 17.

She said a juvenile was arrested and charged on December 29 with two counts of break and enter over two of the incidents.

Insp Bruce would not reveal what was stolen, but said Father Richard Foley's white Holden Commodore was stolen on December 31 and found four days later, burnt out in bushland near the Box Ridge mission.

As there were no CCTV cameras in the vicinity of St Joseph's, police are now appealing for information from the community.

"A Richmond LAC crime prevention officer is being sent out to do a safety and security assessment on the site," Insp Bruce said.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is urged to contact Coraki police on 6683 2244 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
