Coraki, Ballina shut out rivals
CORAKI defeated Royals 4-0 and Ballina downed Sailors 2-0 in A-grade men's hockey on Saturday.
Although without Alex and Bailey Powell, Coraki wasted no time stamping their authority with Zach Clark scoring from a penalty corner in the opening minute.
Coraki welcomed back 2016 captain Sam Brown for his debut appearance of the season.
Royals settled and kept the aggressive Coraki strikers at bay.
Ethan White made it 2-0 eight minutes before half-time.
Midway through the second section Hayden Scurr found space and put Coraki three in front.
Royals defended well to turn back Coraki several times. Goalkeeper Josh Rose played well and kept out a Matt Scurr penalty stroke, which is no mean feat.
Tristan White scored in the last five minutes to make the final score 4-0.
Ballina didn't have it all their own way against a defiant Sailors outfit at Grafton.
Player of the match Josh Garrett converted a penalty corner midway through the second half with a quality drag flick.
He repeated that in the final five minutes to give his side their first win of the season.
Sam Davis was outstanding for Ballina and Brody Robinson also played well.
Sailors showed plenty of spirit and will test most sides.
