Coraki and Northern Star get the points but fail to impress
CORAKI hung on to defeat East Lismore 2-0 while Northern Star overcame a stubborn Ballina 3-1 in Far North Coast A-grade men's hockey.
In the Premier League, East Lismore drew 1-all with an improving Royals at Grafton on Saturday.
Star didn't play well and Ballina had plenty of chances to win their first local match of the season.
Only goalkeeper Cameron Horne, who is in great form, denited them.
Ballina, even without key striker and playmaker Sam Davis, dominated the first half and had more opportunity to score than the defending premiers.
It was nil-all at half-time but not long after the break Matt Frost scored for Star.
Ballina responded with a goal to Corey Watson.
In the closing stages Harry Smith for Star deflected a long shot into the goal and Thomas Vantaggiato scored a drag flick goal to give the premiers a 3-1 win.
Hamilton, Cameron Palmer and Toby Cronin stood out for Ballina while Horne, Vantaggiato and Lincoln Appleton were Star's best.
Coraki and East Lismore didn't do a lot in their Friday night match; Coraki led 2-0 at the break courtesy of an early goal to Alex Powell and a Sam Brown penalty corner.
Not much could be said of the second half.
On Saturday Easts scored early via Isaac Layton and Royals converted a penalty corner soon after to equalise.
Goalkeeper Luke Kelso was outstanding for East Lismore.
