Cops call for info on Garda murder

INVESTIGATIONS into the murder of Byron Bay businessman John ‘Jack’ Garda are continuing while two brothers charged over the killing are due to re-appear in Lismore Local Court next month.

Kevin Purtill, of Lennox Head, was charged with Mr Garda’s murder and his brother, Warren, has been charged as an accessory.

Meanwhile the NSW Homicide Squad has reissued its appeal for anyone with information that may assist investigators, to come forward. Information can be supplied confidentially through the Crime Stoppers hotline.

Three hundred friends and family members attended a memorial service at Mullumbimby two weeks ago and hundreds of people have posted loving tributes on a dedicated website.

Local Rabbi Moshe Serebryanski told the Australian Jewish news service, J-Wire, that he knew Mr Garda who ‘readily identified himself as being Jewish’.

Friends say Mr Garda was close to his elderly mother, a Holocaust survivor who lives in a Jewish aged-care facility in Sydney. When his regular phone calls to his mother stopped after his disappearance in February, alarm bells went off.
