WHERE would you keep 14 Golden Guitar awards?

Mackay singer/songwriter Graeme Connors has that many and now he's been nominated for five more at the Country Music Australia Awards to be held next month in Tamworth.

Mr Connors said the nominations weren't necessarily a surprise.

"You expect they (nominations) might happen but you can't bet on it, so it's exciting" he said.

The high profile performer has won 14 of the awards in a career spanning more than 35 years, but when it comes to showing off the golden statues he's a little shy.

"I can't tell you where they are," Mr Connors said.

"Let's just say they are in storage.

"But we always have one available in case visitors want to see them."

Mr Connors said his song writing was all about relating to people.

"It's a mixture of experience as well as being an observer," he said. "I think if you have an antenna out the songs generally drop in on you before you know it.

"Back in the '90s (the song) Road Less Travelled (listen below) was a very big song for me.

"But from my perspective my favourite song is the next one I'll write."

He said his family had been a great support over the years.

"My wife sometimes joins me on tour now too. The boys (Mr Connors' sons) might come along (on tour) too if they feel like a weekend away in Cairns.

" So it's the best of both worlds."

Nashville is a popular destination for many country music stars but Mr Connors said he wasn't interested.

"I've been there for extended periods," he said.

"Australian stories and characters interest me.

Mr Connors' 16th album, At the Speed of Life, is out now.

His nominations are for Male Artist of the Year, APRA Song of the Year and Toyota Heritage Song of the Year (The Mouth of the River); Heritage Song of the Year (Bondwood Boat); and Album of the Year.

Graeme Connors' favourite artists include singer/songwriters like:

  •  Ben Harper
  •  Randy Newman
  •  Mumford & Sons
  •  Paul Green
