Why Ballina's Bevan is the comeback king of boxing

BALLINA boxer Bevan Connor just can't shake that competitive spirit.

The 43-year-old will this weekend step back into the ring after a 10-year break, competing in the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide in the open welterweight division.

He said plenty of people have asked why he wants to fight again, and the answer is simple: "The competition". Connor has been boxing since he was 10, starting out with the Ballina RSL Youth Club where he is now a coach.

He has a string of titles to his name, including an Australian junior title as a 17-year-old, two State titles and seven Far North Coast titles.

Connor first stepped away from the sport as a 22-year-old. But there was that competitive spirit.

He made a comeback 10 years later, at 32, but only stayed in the sport for 12 months.

Another 10 years later, and he is preparing to get back in the ring again.

He has been training for the Australian Masters for the past two years, and said he was ready to fight 12 months ago, but he couldn't find an opponent at the regional boxing tournaments.

He said more than 200 boxers have entered the Australian Masters Games, across all weight divisions.

And there is one fighter from South Australia who Connor remembers boxing against in his youth.

They won't meet up again this time as Connor is in a lighter weight division.

He laughed when he was told there was a pattern with his comebacks - they happen every 10 years.

That could mean he might be making another comeback in his 50s. Connor thanked his coaches, Casey O'Donnell and Eli Hedges for their work.

Connor will be competing at the Australian Masters Games from October 4-7.
