Community remembers war effort

THE NAMES had begun to fade and the woodwork frame had started to fall apart, but the sacrifice made by locals listed on First World War honour roll at the South Gundurimba Hall was not forgotten.

The honour roll, made in 1919, lists the names of pupils from the South Gundurimba Public School who enlisted in the First World War.

Most of them returned home safely, but five of them never did, and one succumbed to injuries.

Committee members thought it was important to remember their sacrifice and have had the honour roll restored by craftsman Colin Fardo of Casino.

Pieces of the timber frame had fallen off or been lost over the years, but it has been painstakingly restored to the original condition.

Secretary Alan Hoskins said they were looking forward to the rededication service on April 23.

"These guys went to war for us, five died and one died following the war. They did a fantastic job in forming Australia," Mr Hoskins said.

"The committee feel strongly about holding an event to put it back up."

The committee are trying to contact descendants of those listed on the honour roll to invite them to attend the service and to bring along memorabilia.

The service starts at 11am and will be conducted by the RSL.

Anyone with information can contact President Lorna Stormon on 66290255 or Alan Hoskins on 0418664015.
