LISTEN: Kayleigh happy and 'squealing' day before death

Update, 6.07pm:

THE day before she died in her sleep, seven-month-old Kayleigh Tetley was happy and playful, spending time with her mother and grandparents.

"She absolutely loves her Nana. She was there, she was yelling at her granddad, he kept going off at her as a joke, and she was going off back at him," said Kayleigh's mother Monique Ilic-Carlyle.

"In the bath she was squealing like she always does, she gets overexcited and squeals."

Ms Ilic-Carlyle put her baby daughter to bed at 8 o'clock on Friday night.

About 11pm, Kayleigh's father Richard Tetley went into the room to check on Kayleigh and her 18-month-old sister Teliah.

But 6.30am the next day, Kayleigh was dead.

"I walked in their room to get the bottle, and I noticed Kayleigh's hand was up," Ms Ilic-Carlyle said.

"I went to move her hand down, and all I felt was cold. She was really stiff."

Since then, Ms Ilic-Carlyle has been numb with the loss of her child.

"All I could do was cry. I couldn't look at her and, as bad as it sounds, I couldn't touch her because I was just so scared," she said.

"I had no idea what to do. I sat outside crying and crying and crying."

The family is waiting to hear the results of an autopsy, due this week.

They don't know why Kayleigh died, but Ms Ilic-Carlyle said it may be related to her daughter's chronic chest problems.

Friends have rallied around the Blacks Beach family as they grapple with the loss.

Emily Connelley, one of Ms Ilich-Carlyle's closest friends, hasn't left her side since Kayleigh's death.

Ms Connelley, a mother herself, said Kayleigh was "the happiest baby" she's ever seen.

"Nothing fazed her... she was such a happy baby," she said.

"She would constantly have a smile, she'd constantly be laughing."

On a single income, the Ms Ilic-Carlyle and Mr Tetley are struggling to afford a funeral for their littler girl who they'll never see grow up.

Ms Connelley has set up a crowdfunding page to raise funds for Kayleigh's service, and at the time of printing the campaign had attracted more than $1300 in donations.
